GOC – General Operator's Certificate
The GOC (General Operator's Certificate) is a GMDSS radio operator certificate valid for operating all types of GMDSS radio equipment in Sea Areas A1, A2, A3 and A4.
The course combines theoretical instruction with practical radio training and is held with an instructor. Sjøfartsdirektoratet

- GMDSS procedures and regulations
- VHF and MF/HF DSC
- NAVTEX
- VHF/MF/HF voice procedures
- Inmarsat C satellite communication
- Iridium
- Antennas and power supply
- EPIRB, Radar SART and AIS SART
- SAR procedures
- Practical radio exercises
Course format
The course is held over 10 consecutive days, including a practical/oral examination on the final day. NMKS
GOC course in Oslo
NMKS provides GOC training at our facilities in Oslo, where the practical radio training is carried out using our fixed GMDSS radio equipment.
Certificate validity
The GOC certificate is valid for five years and must be renewed. Refresher courses are available through NMKS.
ROC or GOC?
GOC covers GMDSS Sea Areas A1–A4, while ROC is valid for GMDSS radio equipment in Sea Area A1 only.
