ROC – Restricted Operator's Certificate

The ROC (Restricted Operator's Certificate) is a GMDSS radio operator certificate valid for operating all types of GMDSS radio equipment in Sea Area A1.

The course combines theoretical instruction with practical radio training and is held with an instructor.

Course content

  • GMDSS procedures and regulations
  • VHF DSC
  • NAVTEX
  • Distress, urgency and safety communication
  • EPIRB and SART
  • SAR procedures
  • Practical radio exercises

Course format

The course is held over five consecutive days and includes practical training on real maritime radio equipment.

ROC courses throughout Norway

NMKS operates a transportable radio station, allowing us to provide ROC courses at several locations throughout Norway for groups and companies.

Certificate validity

The ROC certificate is valid for five years and must be renewed. Refresher courses are available through NMKS.

ROC or GOC?

ROC covers GMDSS Sea Area A1, while GOC is valid for GMDSS radio equipment in Sea Areas A1–A4.
